Bicarbonate® is effective at lowering the pH of drilling slurry. Bicarbonate maintains a pH of 8.0-9.0 which is why it is useful at lowering the pH of drilling slurry from a pH of 12-13 (alkaline) to a pH range of 8.0-9.0. Bicarbonate is a cushion that acts as a buffer to maintain a pH of 8.0-9.0. This lowers pH, or bases, which raise pH, are added to the slurry solution.
